Mother’s Day is this Sunday, 13 May when we recognise our Mums, Mothers, Moms … the women who kissed our boo-boos and made us eat breakfast because they knew it was good for us.
To each of us, our mother is a queen, and so what better way to show our appreciation than to treat her like the royalty she is? This Saturday, 12 May, the Cayman Motor Museum is celebrating all the mothers on the island by making available its Daimler DK400 Royal Limousine for photos. That’s right! Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself rode in this nothing-less-than majestic vehicle after she was crowned Queen of England and now your mother can don a tiara and have her picture taken in the self same car.
A royal history
As supplier to the Royal Court of prestigious motor cars, Daimler received this order for the queen’s forthcoming journeys.
The chassis was completed on 21 September, 1955, at Daimler’s Coventry Factory, but the car was not finished until 18 May, 1956.
It was shipped directly to Sweden for her use during her visit there from 8 to 10 June, 1956.
After that time, it was sent to Scotland where the queen’s family was staying for a period in the same year. The car was used by the family many times over the years; the Queen Mother, for example, used it as her personal transport when she made a visit to Germany in 1977. This Daimler has a special mention in the book “Royal Daimlers” by B.E. Smith.
The Cayman Motor Museum has a tiara and a top hat, so for a few minutes anyone can feel like a member of the royal family seated in this fabulous car. Why not stop by with your mother this Saturday before Mother’s Day and get her a unique gift that she will always treasure? Don’t forget – a picture is worth a thousand words.
Opening hours are from 9am to 5pm with special rates for local residents.
