Culture Quest for R-C children

An oft-quoted statistic about the Cayman Islands is that there are more than 100 nationalities in the territory.

It’s a cross-section that is reflected in the hospitality industry, with staff coming from far and wide to work in hotels, restaurants and tourism jobs.

For example, at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman there are more than 50 nationalities, said communications manager Melissa Ladley.

“Every year, families that come here from May to August are fascinated by the diversity of the people and tend to tick off the nationalities that they meet. So when Marc Langevin joined us as general manager we figured out how to make this into an activity for kids and Culture Quest was the result,” she said.

Getting signatures

Each child from 7 to 12 years old is given a special “passport” brochure with facts about various countries, plus information on that country, flags and a space to get a signature from a staff member from that country.

“If they get 20 or more autographs they win a prize; also, non-listed nations can be a bonus extra and kids can win a logoed back pack. It’s part of our Summer Splash marketing,” Ms Ladley said. The scheme is launched on Memorial Day weekend, 25 to 27 May.

One thing that differentiates Cayman, she added, is this blend of cultures.

“The No. 1 TripAdvisor comment is how many nationalities work in our hotel,” she said.
