Cayman’s top amateur boxer Dariel Ebanks has decided to join the pro ranks after failing to reach the London Olympics.
Light-heavyweight Ebanks, 23, went to Rio de Janeiro for the final Olympic trials earlier this month. He won his first bout, against an Argentinian but was outpointed by a Dominican in his next fight. The division’s winner was an American, Marcus Browne.
“I’m going to turn pro this year and try to get my weight down to fight at middleweight,” he said. He leaves the amateurs with an excellent record of only three losses in 28 bouts. All three defeats were to world class opponents.
Kendall Ebanks was also at the Olympic trials in Rio but because of an unfortunate transportation mix up, he failed to get to the venue in time for his first bout and was disqualified.
Tafari Ebanks was the third Caymanian on the trip and he too did not box after weighing in over the featherweight limit of 126lbs.
