The Flowers Sea Swim recently honoured numerous Olympians.
In its 20th year, the competition took place over the weekend with an Olympic theme ahead of the London 2012 Olympics this summer. Last Thursday, organizers officially welcomed some 10 Olympic swimmers who came down for the event.
Ian Crocker, Scott Goldblatt, BJ Bedford, Kaitlin Sandeno and Janelle Atkinson-Wignall were among those given plaques to commemorate their arrival. They were also treated to a pre-race luncheon at Abacus in Camana Bay. All have decorated careers that include medals and Olympic showings.
Crocker is a five-time Olympic medalist with three gold, one silver, one bronze over a span of three Olympic Games. He is a former world record holder in seven events, including the 100m butterfly, from 2003 to 2009. Goldblatt won a silver medal as a member of the 4×200 freestyle relay USA team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was also a member of the 2004 Athens 4×200 freestyle relay team that won Olympic gold for the Americans.
Bedford is a former US backstroke swimmer who was part of the American team that won the Olympic gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay at the 2000 Olympics. Sandeno carries four Olympic medals (gold, silver and two bronze) from the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Atkinson-Wignall is a two-time Olympian, having taken part in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Games.
