Rendering everyday life in art is central to Gordon Solomon’s latest exhibition.
Bikes, Birds, Boats opens at Full of Beans in Pasadora Place on Wednesday, 5 September with free canapes from 5.30 to 7.30pm. The artist explains to Weekender how the concept came apart.
“I like to do paintings about things that I encounter or see everyday, it’s like recording my memories through my art,” he tells us. “As a bike rider, I like the idea of capturing images on my rides and one thing that I noticed where the fauna, the birds that are everywhere, another common subject are boats and in this series I focus on more modern Cayman.”
It marks his second solo exhibition of 2012, featuring small original oil paintings.
“My last exhibition was titled ‘Paths’, which was successful, selling 11 out of the 16 also featured small paintings. Currently, I am one of several artists featured in The National Gallery’s Founded Upon the Seas exhibition.
“Another memorable moment was winning second place in the Ogier Art Award for my painting Back to my Roots. Most of my income nowadays is from painting, rather than paintings – interior/exterior works within homes or murals,” Gordon explains.
Always at work
He says he’s always working on something new and is hoping to exhibit at home in his studio later this year, although he is always looking for new opportunities to exhibit.
Whilst he does take notice of the world around him, he says that hurricane season doesn’t affect the way he approaches his subjects, preferring to go with the flow. Changes, he says, happen every day and that makes up both a challenge and a driving force.
This is Gordon’s third show at Full of Beans in six years, following Born In It (2006), which dealt with fatherhood, and 2009’s Painters Muse, which was an artistic interpretation of his wife Alta’s poetry. So how does he see the current Cayman art scene?
“Although we’ve seen a resting period, more and more people are realising the importance of art, the significance of owning art and the increased value throughout the years,” he concludes.
