Rogues set to kick off twice

Combat sports enthusiasts at the Rogue Gym get two chances of indulging their passion in the next few weeks.

First there is a Muay Thai seminar on 15 September, organised by Rogue’s Muay Thai instructor Grey Brett, then it’s a ‘smoker’ event at the Rogue Gym on West Bay Road, beside Treasure Island, on 29 September when fighters will be matched in an afternoon session. The first smoker in February was an incredible successful.

Smokers are informal gym shows for fighters to have bouts in front of a small crowd to gauge their progress and keep them motivated. It literally breaks up the monotony of just constantly training. Each fighter is having their first Muay Thai match. Some have some grappling experience while others have some boxing experience.

The seminar is being conducted by Kru Mikey Perez who is the owner of Southside Muay Thai in Toronto, Canada and has been a multiple federation featherweight world champion in recent years. Perez recently competed for the Northern Thailand title.

Poo Choi Bruce Ong won a world lightweight title last year and is a former training partner of Brett. Ong will assist with the seminar. Brett said: “We are hosting the event to share traditional Muay Thai with the community and help to prepare our Rogue Gym fighters for the event two weeks later,” said Brett.

“We have had an excellent response from our current members and hope to be able to reach out to the people on island who have not yet heard of us or may not know the quality of our programmes.

“We have two separate seminars planned for next week. An advanced session and an open/all levels session where we hope to attract anyone looking to give authentic Muay Thai a try.”

The advanced session is in the morning and the open/all levels session in the afternoon. Tickets are $25.

The smoker will include Muay Thai, boxing and grappling matches. Food and beverages included in the $25 ticket price, sponsored by XQ’s and CayBrew.

Brett added: “Rogue Gym is growing and we do expect that this event will build on the tremendous success our first event had. The community response thus far has been great.

“We would like to thank our sponsors for both events, Rogue Gym, FitLine Mobile Sports, Sunshine Suites, Sunshine Grill, CayBrew, XQ’s, Cayman Fight Factory, AAP plumbing electrical and air conditioning and AAP Solar The Treasure Island Swim School, Relevant Holdings Ltd and Everything Under The Sun Gardening and Landscaping.”

So far the matches are Juneau Barnett against Alex Daigle at 175 pounds, Kenny Dryburgh and Darwin Lanza at 145, Luigi Ordonez and Jeff Jackson open weight, Dave O’Driscoll versus Bobby Daigle at 160, Andrew Ford facing Troy O’Neil at 190 plus Garry Tierny and Ryan Charles at 145 in an exhibition match.

There will also be some grappling matches.
