Talent on show at Harquail Theatre

September is National Recovery Month and the Department of Counselling Services is taking this opportunity to celebrate addiction recovery and promote prevention with a series of events planned throughout the month.

The first of these takes place this evening, Friday, 7 September, at the Harquail Theatre. Caribbean Haven, the residential centre that offers inpatient treatment for treatment of addiction, is putting on a talent showcase.

The event is open to all and admission is free, although donations will be gratefully received.

As tickets are not being issued, plan to get there in good time as curtains up is at 7.30pm. A host of local performers will be singing, dancing, miming and reciting poems.

“Caribbean Haven Residential Centre is lip-syncing to a Spice Girls song (in costume), the Counselling Centre is doing a comedy routine and the Family Resource Centre is doing a dance number,” says Lynn Robinson, programme coordinator at Caribbean Haven.

Later in the month, other departments within the Department of Counselling Services will be putting on different events.

“The Counselling Centre is hosting a family fun day on Saturday, 15 September, at the Turtle Farm. Some tickets have been donated; however, this event is also open to the public (they have some great prizes and giveaways as well). The Family Resource Centre is hosting lunch and learn sessions on Monday, 11 and 18 September, for parents and a snack and learn for students on the 25 September. The final week is a joint effort by all three departments where we will be hosting a banquet/auction/alumni honouring event. The date for that is 29 September,” Lynn tells us.
