Laughter lovers have been treated to male comedians from the Laughter Lounge organisers for almost two years so it was a refreshing change when three women, aka the Lionesses took centre stage last weekend.
The Lioness Invasion at the Great Room in the Strand, featured three of the best female comedians on the circuit in raucous host B-Phlat plus Patricia Brown and Melanie Comarcho. Women in the audience enjoyed a rebalance of the usual misogyny on offer. Men bashing was the recurring theme to waves of applause.
B-Phlat has been spreading her own unique blend of brassy, urban humour for years and has it down to a fine art. For example, she thinks hip hop music of the past is far superior to today’s monotonous, repetitive version.
“At least with Freaks Come Out at Night, you knew what they were talking about!” As for the hit Thong Song from a decade ago, she would like a female version all about the male anatomy.
Pat Brown finds humour on the usual theme of single, older women searching fruitlessly for a male partner and the scarcity of available decent men. But she also has a pop at married couples who she presumes are totally miserable. “The married ones smiling and clapping the hardest are the ones just about to get divorced,” she mocks.
The bulk of Comarcho’s repertoire is X-rated topics – all hilarious and perfectly delivered. Smug single men with careers and their own properties and cars but no girlfriend should beware, Comarcho has the perfect retort concerning size.
Laughter Lounge promoters Rod Jefferson and Brad Watt made a great call again with these two nights and the momentum continues on 5 and 6 October with more excellent comedy.
