Lee: U21 team will improve future

Gillian Lee is convinced that more national teams will improve the future of Cayman netball.

The technical director for Cayman netball is conducting tryouts for the national Under-21 team. The Cayman Islands Netball Association is sending a squad to the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland next August.

Lee, who is also Cayman’s national netball coach, states the goal goes beyond Scotland.

“The U21 age group is the next generation of senior representatives for Cayman,” Lee said. “To be able to teach these players the game will be invaluable for the future of Cayman netball.

“Also, since there hasn’t been Cayman national teams for many years, this is the start of a new era for netball in Cayman, so that should be very exciting for all the young netballers.

“We will be also selecting more national teams at different age groups in the coming year and really building netball for Caymanian kids.”

Try outs start on Monday, 17 September, 5-7pm at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts. Additional sessions will take place the rest of the month on: Wednesday, 19 September, 5-7pm; Monday, 24 September, 5-7pm; Saturday, 29 September, 8-10am and Sunday, 30 September, 4-6pm.

Selected players will be posted on the association website on Monday, 1 October. All players are required to fill in a registration form prior to the selections, which can be found at caymannetball.ky/development/national-teams.

News of the tryouts comes as the association prepares for the season opening uniform parade on 3 November with the national women’s league commencing on 15 November.

The summer mixed league is currently ongoing with matches at Truman Bodden and Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. The competition runs until October with matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm. Some six teams have signed up in the Blazers, Rising Stars, Stay Alive, Lone Star-Boos Mix, The Bold and the Beautiful and the Flames Strikers.
