Mixed league netball in the Cayman Islands is nearing its final stages.
The Cayman Islands Netball Association is staging its regular season finale for the Summer Mixed League, presented by Camana Bay. The Arts and Recreation Centre hosts a trio of matches from 6.30pm on Tuesday, 9 October.
Technical director for Cayman netball Gillian Lee states the men have held their own in the competition.
“Many of the men playing have never played before and many have never even seen the game being played, so their improvement is dramatic,” Lee said. “The men are finding out how best to use their elevation and skills so now the games have spectacular plays, which is awesome to watch. I encourage the public to come down and watch the games as there is free entry.”
Tuesday’s match schedule sees Rising Stars against Lone Star-Boo’s Mix at 6.30pm with The Bold and the Beautiful facing Blazers at 7.30pm. Flames Strikers challenge Stay Alive at 8.30pm.
The league tipped off in early September and consists of the six aforementioned squads. Blazers are the frontrunners at 4-0 with Stars, Strikers and Stay Alive all level at 2-2. Lone Star are 1-1-2 with Bold and Beautiful in the cellar at 0-1-3. A number of talented male players are in the league like the Stars’ Damian McField and Stay Alive’s Ovaine Monteith.
After Tuesday’s matches, the league finals are slated for next Tuesday, 16 October, at Camana Bay. Lee, who doubles as Cayman’s national coach, states the playoff push will be interesting.
“My prediction is to watch out for Stars and Strikers. Both these teams have started putting some awesome plays together so, at the moment, it will be a real fight to get into the grand final against Blazers.”
