Arrr, can ye write a song me hearties?

Entries are still being sought for the 2012 Pirates Week Song Contest, sponsored by Budweiser.

This year, the competition has a top prize of $1,000 plus four hours studio time with Hopscotch Studios. Once the demo has been produced it will be forwarded to VP Studios for consideration by the person responsible for new talent recruitment. All rights to the song remain the property of writer and performer, but Pirates Week National Festival may use the winning songs free of charge for the promotion of Pirates Week.

The competition is open to anyone over 18 resident in the Cayman Islands for at least one year as of the entry deadline. Songs previously entered into Pirates Week contests are not eligible, but previously-released ones are. Lyrics and music must be original, lively, upbeat Caribbean Carnival music and only one song may be performed.

How to enter

Submit a compact disc and typed or printed lyric sheet to Cayman Free Press office, or online at by filling in your details and sending through your recorded song and your lyrics.

The song will be uploaded onto the website where the general public will vote for the one they like the best. Only one vote per person will be allowed per hour. This will stop multiple voting to be fair to all entrants.

Competition deadline is Friday, 26 October at 5pm. Voting will start online on Tuesday, 30 October, and end at noon on Thursday, 8 November.

The contest winner must be available to be in the Pirates Week Float Parade if so requested and to make personal appearances throughout the 10 days of Pirates Week if requested.
