The manufacturer of Banana Boat Ultramist sunscreen has recalled the product due to a risk of the spray igniting on the skin if it comes in contact with an open flame or spark.
Supermarkets and pharmacies in the Cayman Islands pulled the bottles of sunscreen spray from shelves following the recall announcement on Friday, 19 October.
The recall applies to 23 Banana Boat spray-on sunscreens after receiving four reports of people’s skin being burned while using Banana Boat SPORT Ultramist SPF 30 and 50 products in the United States and Canada.
Energizer, the company that makes the sunscreen, launched the voluntarily recall because of safety concerns.
“Energizer believes that this issue is associated with the product delivery system, specifically the size of the spray valve opening on the affected products. The spray valve opening on the affected products dispenses more than is typical in the industry for continuous sun care sprays.
“As a result, the product is taking longer to dry on the skin than is typical with other continuous sprays. If a consumer comes into contact with a flame or spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin, there is a potential for the product to ignite,” a statement from the company read.
“Consistent with existing warnings on all continuous spray sun care products, consumers should take care to avoid sources of ignition when using these products, should not smoke while using these products, and should not use these products in the presence of a flame or spark,” the company statement continued.
People who have purchased any of the continuous spray Banana Boat products on the recall list are advised not to use them.
Consumers with questions or complaints regarding the market withdrawal can contact Energizer by calling Consumer Affairs at 1-800-SAFESUN (1-800-723-3786) Monday through Friday, 8am to 7pm Eastern Time, or by sending an e-mail to: [email protected]
Those who have bought the product in the Cayman Islands can return it to the retail outlet at which they purchased it for a refund.
