Movember teed up well

Movember Cayman hosted its first ever Charity Golf Tournament at North Sound Golf Club.

In a new expansion to the Movember events, The MO’pen was the first of an annual opportunity for companies to entertain colleagues and clients and for individuals to display their golf skills, whilst continuing to support Movember and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.

Movember Cayman is an annual charity event held during November with the aim of creating awareness and raising money for men’s health and prostate cancer.

Men in the Cayman Islands raise money by collecting sponsorships for growing a moustache. Other events in the Movember calendar included the opening (at Aqua Beach) and closing (at Elements) parties, Movember MeatFest (Dukes) and an Information night (Lions Centre).

The tournament on 23 November started with an early morning session at 8am as teams piled into their carts laden with Budweiser goodies and headed off into the sunrise to get the competition started.

Four hours later a second round of participants arrived for another tee off – allowing over 140 people to participate during the course of the day.

In true Movember spirit, the organising committee and sponsors had many things up their sleeves to keep the day fun and lighthearted.

A putting competition was set up outside the clubhouse using cases of Budweiser to create an obstacle course on the green.

Mulligans were available for purchase contributing even more to the day’s fundraising efforts. There was also a hole in one contest with a grand prize of a brand new electric car from Cayman Automotive – sadly the windy conditions made it too difficult for any golfer to win it.

JS De Jager from Movember was the brains behind the new event and was thrilled with the turn-out. “We were amazed at how quickly the event sold out and I’m happy to announce that we exceeded our fundraising target on the day,” he said.

“A special thank you to all of our sponsors, Budweiser for helping us set up and providing the prizes, and to the volunteers from the Cancer Society, the staff and golf professionals at North Sound Golf Club who gave up their day to help out with registration, set up, manning the hole-in-one green and various other tasks which contributed to such a great day.”

Maya Ogorzalek from Cayman Distributors said: “The M’Open is a great addition to the Movember calendar and we can’t wait to be involved again next year! Congratulations to JS and to everyone who took part.”
