Eric Mildenberger is a hockey player who recently made a statement in local angling.
Along with captain Tom Sperandeo, Mildenberger had the biggest catch for round one of the annual All tackle fishing tournament in the form of a 40.3 pound wahoo.
Mildenberger and Sperandeo were aboard Reel Crazy II, which featured crew members like Jack Hunter and John Sperandeo. The wahoo was caught off 60-mile bank and weighed at the Barcadere Marina in George Town.
Most of the catches were wahoo. Trailing Mildenberger and company would be Shelly Ware, the lone female angler thus far, with a 37.2lb fish aboard Disco Fever alongside Emil Terry and John Doak. Jackie Ebanks also produced a 37.2lb wahoo, though it was caught in Cayman Brac aboard Can Do.
Jason Begg-Smith had the lone yellowfin tuna catch, off 60-mile bank. The fish was 32.5lbs and was caught on Sea Bird, which is owned by hockey player Colin Wilson, alongside captain Kevin Wall and Jason’s brother Dale Begg-Smith.
Azzan Sherieff caught a 17lb dolphin aboard Lady Luck 2, with his sister Brandi Sherieff as a crew member. The lone junior angler thus far is John ‘JoJo’ Sperandeo, who nabbed a 16.6lb wahoo off 60-mile bank aboard Reel Crazy II.
The tournament is slated to continue this weekend. The Cayman Islands Angling Club, which organises the competition, made a late decision to split the event into two parts due to iffy sea conditions.
In a statement, the club states, “the decision as to which day we will fish this coming weekend will be decided around Thursday. Registered boats will be notified. Also, if any one wants to register for this last day of the tournament, you must do so by contacting Donna at 916-0179.”
Among the tournament sponsors are Tomlinson Furniture, A.L. Thompson’s Home Depot, Animal House, Kirk Marine and Barcadere Marina.
