RCIPS calls off boat search

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service helicopter assisted in a search for missing boaters in the waters between Cayman Brac and Jamaica Thursday.

At 10:05 am Thursday, the RCIPS Marine Unit received a report from the Jamaican Coast Guard which stated that a vessel informed them by radio that there was a blue canoe drifting 60 kilometers southeast of Cayman Brac with three people onboard.

The RCIPS and the Jamaican Coast Guard coordinated the search with up to five commercial vessels in the area assisting. The RCIPS helicopter responded and carried out an extensive search of the area. It was determined that the vessel which reported the matter assisted the boat in distress and that the craft may have continued on its journey.

The canoe was not located and the RCIPS called off the search around 4pm Thursday afternoon.
