While Christmas means many different things to different people here in Grand Cayman, for the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens it is a time of giving and service to those in need. Part of the Camana Bay Christmas Give, this year the Club holds its 3rd Annual Christmas Gift Basket initiative in partnership with Camana Bay and Regatta Office Park.
There are many families in the Cayman Islands that are struggling to make ends meet, let alone give their children a memorable Christmas. Recognising a need for added support over the busy holiday season, in 2010 Dart Realty diverted funds reserved for corporate gift baskets to Camana Bay and Regatta Office Park office tenants to the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens to help those who are truly in need. The Lions Club delivered 32 gift baskets to identified families across Cayman.
Over the years, the initiative has grown, allowing the Club to make a positive difference to the lives of many in our community. In 2011, the Club delivered baskets to more than 200 families and this year, hopes to deliver even more to those in need. Baskets are filled with basic grocery items to last throughout the year, as well as a Christmas turkey or ham and fresh produce, to ensure every family in Cayman has a wonderful holiday.
Lionism began in the Cayman Islands in 1972, with the charter of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman. In 1993, a “women’s arm” was formed, the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens. Today the Club has 25 active members and a host of dedicated volunteers.
The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens works diligently in the local community, making regular visits to the elderly at home and in The Pines, assisting with primary and high school projects, including the Lighthouse School, and a number of community initiatives, such as the Young Parents Programme, the Lions International Sight Programme and Fairbanks Prison counselling. However, the Club is best known for its annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, held every year in October.
The Lions Club is collecting the names of families who would benefit from the Christmas Gift Basket initiative.
If you know someone in need, please send their contact details and the reason for your nomination to [email protected] or call 916-5008.
