Culture, arts, music on the Paseo

Live on the Paseo is developing into a really awesome showcase for Cayman’s upcoming talent and the first Friday of every month continues that steady growth.

On Friday, 1 February there’s a whole lot of stuff going on. First off, there’s a Capoeira demo – the awesome dance/music/martial art from Brazil.

Then Little Magic comes on with their signature fusion of Caribbean, Jazz, Latin, Blues, R&B and some original music. The United World Colleges Cayman Islands will share info on upcoming scholarship and educational opportunities and Natasha Kozaily is also performing.

By the looks of things, our ‘Tash has got a busy year ahead so Weekender caught up with her for a few questions. And answers, obviously.

What’s 2013 been like so far?

Busy but balanced! I have a tendency to become consumed with new ideas and creative projects to the point that everything else in my life will take a back seat, even eating and sleeping! 2013 has brought a dramatic change in my life in terms of finding that balance and not letting myself get too carried away. I’ve also started practicing Yoga on a daily basis this year and it’s changed my life. In many ways 2013 has been full of new awakenings and amazing potential.

What does the rest of the year have in store?

At the moment I’m working on a new album! We’re recording it with Lost Ark Studios [San Diego] at the end of February and I’m thrilled about it. It’s been quite a journey these last few years both personally and musically and I’m ready to share these songs in a way I’ve never done before. My artistic journey has been one of great discovery and experimentation and now I’ve reached a point where I feel like I’ve finally reached home after a long trip abroad. Embracing myself, my voice, my joy and pain and being able to express it all freely in an authentic way is what this album is all about. I couldn’t be happier.

Any gigs / tours / adventures planned?

I have several gigs coming up in San Diego and Cayman. I’ll be kicking off a new showcase series at Camana Bay on Friday. The following day I’ll displaying and selling my art at [email protected] and Sunday 3rd I’ll be playing at Bliss Living Yoga – it’s a busy weekend. And of course I wouldn’t miss the chance to come home and share my new album with everyone so stay tuned for an epic CD Release Party this spring!

What about collaborations?

I started to dive into some electronic music while collaborating with Go Yama last year on his track Clairvoyance. It was so much fun and really refreshing to get out of my comfort zone and into a genre that I love but have never worked with. I’ve also got some new housemates who just moved in. One of them, Matt Molarius, is the lead singer of the band Transfer and he’s be joining me in the studio to sing on one of my tracks.

Who are gonna be the breakthrough artists of 2013 on a world level?

If I told you it would spoil the surprise.

Why is the sky blue? Is it sad?

Sad? No, just the opposite actually! While all the other colours from the sun were racing down to earth, blue decided to take it slow and dance around the sky.
