Youth hockey is pushing ahead at Kings Sports Centre.
The next round of games in the 2013 national youth roller hockey league takes place Saturday, 16 February, at Kings. Matches run from 8am until 4pm, encompassing three main age divisions.
In the Squirts 13-Under segment, focus will be on the 3-0 Jets. Ethan Finlason steadies the team with 11 goals this season. The Maples Leaf, the KPMG Senators and Penguins are among the sides in pursuit.
In the Mites 10-Under category, the Ecay Traders and Bruins are even at 2-1. Ecay’s Jabari Waldron is all the rage with a league-best 19 goals this season. The other teams are the Ernst and Young Eagles, who sport talented scorer Justin Hastings, and the PwC Jets, who feature Ryan Godwin.
According to the last league standings, the Atoms 8-Under division has another unbeaten side in the 3-0 Lightning. Jaxon Cover steadies the offence with eight goals this year.
The other teams have equally prolific scoring talents as the 2-1 Deloitte Hurricanes see Andrew Hastings sporting 13 goals, Cameron Smith leads the Mourant Marksmen with eight goals and Kayden Knapik has 10 goals for the Dart Ducks.
League games began in mid-January and will continue to take place over the coming weeks on Saturdays. Aside from the Squirts, Mites and Atoms segments, the league offers action via a Tykes 6-Under practice group and a learn to skate programme.
Kings official Andre Morgan said the contests have been entertaining.
“Our first weekend of hockey games had a total of six games being played, a learn to skate programme and a 6-and-Under hockey group, sponsored by Conyers Dill and Pearman, training and playing,” Morgan said. “Being the first official games for the kids since the hockey break last November, the kids performed awesome, displaying great effort, good skills and a true passion for hockey.”
