Election time in Cayman

Letter to the Editor

Well, once again, we have come to that time when in our Island when we will choose members of our government and elect the people that will steer the Good Ship Cayman onto a better future.

As we should know by now, our beautiful home Cayman, under the past government, has pointed it to the reef of destruction and the interim government is a part of the same gang that put us in this position. We must not in any way forget that all past and present members of the United Democratic Party share the same blame as Mr. McKeeva Bush.

Now we come to the new election 2013 with some new faces trying to become elected members of the Cayman Islands government. Some are the same UDP, some are the same PPM party, some are coalition and some of them are independent. By the time it is over, we might hear just about all the names we never heard before running in the rat race to the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly.

In the midst of all this, we still hear about members of government in court, members waiting to be charged and even another arrest of someone put in his position by one of the government members – all in the hands of the police!!! Now people of the Cayman Islands, don’t you see something is very wrong with our people that are placed in such important position of trust? So we must be very careful who we choose to put in the positions of leadership in all areas of our government and in all other important areas on our Island.

Our elected members should really be very honourable, honest, trustworthy with real love for our people and our country who are also able to listen to the wishes of our people and be able to plan together with all the other members of government and under the wise advice from the people – move this country forward better for all. We must elect such people that are not selfish and greedy and stupid with no vision for anything that is good for us.

Long gone are the days of electing someone because they are friends of your family or because you think they are nice. We must, in this new election, elect the leadership this country really needs. So please get out and vote. Make sure you don’t make any more mistakes and choose wrong.

It is the right of all that can vote in the next election to make your voice be heard and your vote counted. So be very wise and help to make Cayman better and get rid of all that’s been keeping us back and putting our Island to where it is at present with so much crime, sadness, sorrow, pain, joblessness, prison problems, police problems and our children being lost too young.

Caymanians we need to get a grip now and turn the Good Ship Cayman around in this next elected. Please do so.

  1. Well said.

May I add competent to the list too. Voters have every right to judge candidates on their performance in their previous jobs, especially if they are new to the politcal arena.

If you’re looking to hire a gardener, the guy that comes in with a bunch of photos showing the before and after of all the gardens he worked on is the one to choose over the guy who SAYS what a good gardener he is.

It’s the same with the candidates, they should offer evidence of the skills and qualities they will bring to the table, for and on behalf of the people of Cayman.

There will be a lot of rhetoric and hyperbole so don’t choose based on the claims alone. A claim to make a 5 percent improvement from a guy with a history of consistently delivering the goods is worth more than a claim of 20 percent without.
