Supa Storm knock off All Stars

Supa Storm notched the biggest win of its netball campaign. 

The red rookie squad recently beat Cayman National Bank All Stars B, 28-27, at the Camana Bay Arts and Recreation Centre. The match was part of the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2013 Open League March Feature Round. 

Olivia Samuels, 16, steaded the Storm offence at Goal Attack and said her side was motivated to defeat All Stars B. 

“It was very important, we trained very hard,” Samuels said. “They were our target and we came out hoping to beat them. We’re very happy. It’s very crucial for us to improve our play, do our best and the best we can do will be shown.” 

With the victory, Storm improve to 3-1-0 atop the Plate division, while All Stars B are second at 3-1. Both sides are ahead of 2-1-1 Rising Stars B, 1-3 Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Renegades and the 0-4 Jets.

Last Saturday’s contest was a tight affair that saw All Stars win the first quarter 8-6 before drawing level with Storm at 15-15. Storm won the third quarter 7-4 before All Stars took the fourth period 8-6.  

The match statistics show All Stars had a solid offensive showing as Goal Shooter Karen Smith-James shot 72 per cent from the floor with 21 goals and GA Terry-Ann Hunter shot 85 per cent. 

Saturday’s other contests saw Flames Strikers clip Unity, 44-36, before Storm Radarz beat Rising Stars A, 53-41. Flames won the first period, 12-5, and fourth quarter, 15-8, with Unity taking the second, 14-10, and the third, 9-7. Radarz led their match throughout, enjoying margins of 13-10, 13-11, 14-8 and 13-12. 

GS Latoya Nixon steadied the Flames offence with 28 goals and 75 per cent shooting, while Unity countered with 22 goals and 70 per cent shooting from GA Sheree McKenzie. Storm had an amazing 40 goals off 85 per cent shooting from GS Kay Copeland, while Rising Stars A saw GA Rosemarie Wilson boast 39 goals off 82 per cent shooting. 

As a result, 3-1 Storm sit second in the Championship division, behind 4-0 reigning national champions All Stars A. Rising Stars A are third at 2-2, Flames are 1-3 and Unity are 0-4. 

Matches continue on Thursday, 14 March, at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts as All Stars A face Radarz and Rising Stars A battle Flames at 6.45pm before Optimists challenge Ernst and Young Hot Shots in a showdown of 2-1-0 division three teams.
