The Misfits are the latest champions of coed softball.
The rookie club beat fellow newcomers Digicel Dynamos, 13-6, at the Field of Dreams on Monday. The game served as the finale for the Cayman Islands Little League Association’s 2013 Winter Adult Coed Softball League.
It was a one-sided affair from the start as the Misfits jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the second inning. Hemant Balgobin kept Rupert Whittaker, Raul Nicholson-Coe and the Digicel bats at bay and the Dynamos never recovered.
For the Misfits, the championship seals a remarkable campaign that saw the side finish the regular season in second place. The squad had a 7-4-1 record, which was identical to top-seeded Digicel. Both clubs beat out a pair of teams who have competed in the league for a few seasons in television personality Kevin Morales’ 6-6 G-Force and David Hill’s 3-8 PwC Scorpions.
Aside from the Misfits, three other champions were crowned this year. KPMG A claimed the A Division title by beating Home Gas, 14-9. The rematch of last fall’s finale saw Doug Harrell’s fighting accountants earn revenge and prevent Ryan Ebanks and company from nabbing a 12th championship.
Coors Light Chuggers, behind Sean Landreth, repeated as B league winners by crushing Maples Sluggers, 14-3, last Thursday. Coors Light, who were a competition-best 10-1-1, will now take up the challenge to move up to the top flight after stopping another solid postseason campaign by Shawn Pitterson and David “Baggy” Taylor and company.
Another top seed came out victorious last Tuesday as PwC B clobbered Dart, 21-12. PwC, featuring slugger Chris Orlandini, were 9-2 during the season to finish ahead of Darcy Rivers’ 8-4 Dart.
The fall season is slated to begin on 22 July with the captain’s meeting on 8 July.
