Redver’s girls aiming to soar

The Women of Valour hope Florida will assist their cause.

The basketball team is taking part in camps in the Sunshine State this summer. The first one is at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale this weekend, between 1 and 2 June.

Ray Doxey is one of the organisers of the trip and said it is about broadening the horizons of local players. “We want to get the girls noticed by foreign coaches,” Doxey said. “There are basketball scholarships available at universities overseas and it’s easier for the girls to get those scholarships in the US.

“A big reason why we’re going to Nova first is that the Sharks just completed a great season in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletics Association and they have strong recruiting.”

Doxey is helping sponsor the trip through his company, DRG Construction. Doxey said part of his sponsorship included providing new shoes for the players.

After this weekend’s camp, the squad is expected to visit Palm Beach Atlantic University at the end of June. Leading the Women of Valour will be founder and esteemed local coach Redver Ebanks.

The side centres around player development, with many ladies going on to attend college in the US and compete on local squads. Many of the current members, most notably Chloe Powery, April Ebanks and Guiesha Smith, are part of Ebanks’ team, Welly’s Cool Spot, which is battling the Wolves for Cayman’s national women’s championship.

The Women of Valour are looking for additional sponsorship for this summer and beyond. For more information, contact Doxey at 916-4919 or call Redver Ebanks at 926-9335.
