Man stable after West Bay shooting

A 22-year-old man remained hospitalized in stable condition Sunday morning after police say he was shot and seriously injured Saturday night in West Bay.

Authorities and emergency personnel responded to reports of shots fired about 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the Powell Smith Drive area of West Bay in Grand Cayman, according to a news release issued by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

Police said the victim, who was found conscious at the scene, reported that he was injured when several shots were fired at a house. Police didn’t elaborate about the nature of the man’s injuries. Several spent shells were recovered and multiple bullet holes were observed in a building, said Patrick Beersingh, a police investigator.

Mr. Beersingh said the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Crime scene investigators were on location Sunday and the scene was cordoned off for further processing.

Police are appealing for information in relation to this incident. Anyone who has information is being asked to call 949-7777 or 800-TIPS, or the West Bay police station at 525-8303.
