Rising Stars enjoy top billing

The Cayman Islands’ best mixed netball team is continuing its winning ways.

The Rising Stars hold an unblemished 2-0 record and reside atop the Camana Bay Summer Mixed League standings. Their latest victory was a 22-19 triumph over Unity, formerly called Stay Alive, which were last year’s consolation winners. Last Thursday’s match went down to the wire as both sides were even in the second half, posting 10 points apiece.

Technical director for Cayman netball Gillian Lee said the reigning champs had their hands full with their church-based opponents.

“The last game of the night was super,” Lee said. “It was very competitive, pretty physical with loads of talent, too. The men at goal shooter for both teams, Collin Anglin for Rising Stars and Dave Holness for Unity, were the ‘go to’ players for each team, both being hard to stop.” With the loss, Unity are second in the standings with a 1-1 mark, following an opening game victory against rookie club Mixers, 10-7.

Blazers, starring the likes of Katherine Maw, are third at 1-0; while Mixers, featuring athletic talents such as Jamuel Dell, and Ernst and Young Sunbeams have yet to register victories.

League matches continue tonight at Camana Bay. Rising Stars face Blazers at 6:30 p.m. before facing Mixers in an exhibition contest at 7:30 p.m. Unity battle Sunbeams at 8:30 p.m.

The competition will run on Thursdays for the next few weeks, culminating on Oct. 17.
