Learning through play

A reading program for children ages 3 to 5 is under way in libraries in George Town and West Bay.

The Ministry of Education, Employment and Gender Affairs and the Cayman Islands Public Library Service this month launched the 2013-2014 school year “Play, Read, Learn!”

This is the second year the program has run.

The library-based program, which will continue until June, runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday at the George Town Public Library and every Thursday at the Teacher Redley Powery Library in West Bay.

The yearly schedule includes monthly themes and book titles for each program, which are available for pick up at both libraries.

Play, Read, Learn!, designed by the Public Library Service and the Early Childhood Care and Education Unit in the education ministry, provides reading experiences for children and their caregivers together that encourages “play with purpose.” It involves a structured story-time program that incorporates five basic practices that support learning to read: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing.
