Filipino basketball is reaching its climax.
The Phil-Cay Basketball Tournament, also called the Cayman Islands Basketball Association Division Three League, started its playoffs last weekend. Eight of the nine participating teams have a shot at upsetting 2012 champs Smoothie King, the number two seed at 6-2. Leading the way is regular season winners Carlos and Martin/Lone Star at 6-2. Traditional frontrunners Asian Retail ended up third with an identical record.
Lone Star have relied on national men’s league regular Curtis Wilson, power forward Louie Calara and veteran center Marvin Mendoza. Ferdie Ramiento coaches the defending champs and Asian Retail feature Christian Ferrer and Chris Lucas.
Rounding out the standings are 5-3 Caixchel, 5-3 Big Brother/Tony’s Toys, 3-5 Guardians, 2-6 Ambassadors and 2-6 Hamlyn Electronics. Miracle Brokers International, who went 1-7, did not make the playoffs. The top four teams have “the twice to beat advantage rule,” which basically translates to opening round encounters being best-of-three series. Postseason games will take place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 6:30 p.m. at the association court off Eastern Avenue.
