Olympians will dip in for Marriott dinner

The swimming association is looking forward to its main fundraising event next month.

KPMG is supporting the Splash, Dash and Dine event on Jan. 9-11 with the Olympic gold medal winner and world record holder Ruta Meilutyt and her coach Jon Rudd.

Meilutyt sensationally won 100 meters breaststroke gold at the London Olympics last year, aged 15. She showed this was no fluke by winning gold and silver at the world championships earlier this year. The gold came in the 50m breaststroke in which she set a world record. Her silver came in the 100m breaststroke.

“We are extremely pleased that Ruta and Jon will be our guests for the 2014 Splash, Dash and Dine fundraiser,” said the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association president, Peter MacKay.

“This event is CIASA’s main fundraiser and so, although still in the process of confirming additional Olympic and international swimmers for the event, we wanted to give everyone information about what promises to be an extraordinary event with an equally extraordinary young lady.”

Other confirmed guests are Cayman’s own Olympic swimmer, Brett Fraser, U.S. Olympic coach Neil Walker and U.S. High Performance Coach Dave Kelsheimer.

Splash, Dash and Dine will have age group clinics for the local swim community the two days before the dinner with Olympians and an auction on the Friday at 7 p.m. at The Grand Cayman Marriott, Seven Mile Beach.

There will also be two sea swims of 200m and 400m distance and the swimming association annual awards ceremony and BBQ at Royal Palms, Seven Mile Beach on Saturday Jan. 11.

“Open water swimming, a sport which CIASA and Frank Flowers have nurtured over the years, is emerging as one of the Cayman Islands’ most important sports,” said Hellen Chemeli of KPMG.

“KPMG is committed to giving back to the local community and is proud to support our young, swimmers, who did exceptionally well at the CARIFTA competition and the British, Canadian and Irish Nationals earlier this year.”

Funds raised at the dinner will go towards all of the swimming association’s programs, including learn to swim, coaches clinics and international swim meets such as CARIFTA, Youth Olympics, Island Games, the Commonwealth Games and the masters competitions.
