A pair of star-laden teams lead the way in local netball.
Rising Stars A and Cayman National Bank All Stars B are the top squads to start the New Year in the 2013-2014 Appleby Netball League, put on by the Cayman Islands Netball Association. Each side has only one loss through the opening stages at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.
Rising Stars – who lean on veteran players like Rosemarie Wilson and Marcia Moiten – are 2-1 atop division one. They are ahead of 2-0 Roma, 1-1 Conyers All Stars (the reigning national champions), 0-2 Flames Strikers and 0-2 Unity.
Chemistry and youth could be critical factors in the early going for Rising Stars as the team’s personnel bares few changes from previous campaigns. Listed on the roster are: Mariska Blackman, Patrice Booth, Janeka Ebanks, Sherie Jackson, Moiten, Tara Ramoon, Brittany Rose, Kacey Solomon, Casey Swaby, Tricia Skyers-Palacio, Sheynae Watson, Martika Williams and Wilson.
All Stars B are 4-1 atop division two, leading an expanded field of participants with a number of newcomers. Among them are 4-0 Affinity Sapphires, who sit second ahead of 3-2 Blue Diamonds, 3-2 Rising Stars B, 2-1 Lights International, 1-3 Ernst and Young Hot Shots, 1-3 Spirits, 0-3 Jacques Scott Social and 0-3 University College of the Cayman Islands.
While the core of All Stars remains, there have been some interesting additions on the depth chart. The roster features: Marsha Allen, Trudy-Ann Bodden, Brooke Day, Tammy Fu, Whonda Fuad, Terry-Ann Hunter, Megan Hurlston, Karen Smith-James, Alicia Ludik, Brittany Mobley, Latasha Nixon, Jacolene Otto, Benica Powell, Jane Sinclair, Jasindha Singh, Ishantra Solomon, Aisha Stanuel-Taitte and Janis Wright.
All of those teams will be in action later this month. League action resumes on Jan. 23 with four games starting at 6:45 p.m.
