Garden party ushers culture into New Year

A taste of Caymanian traditions was featured at the Webster annual event

The Webster United Memorial Church welcomed in the New Year by celebrating Caymanian cultural traditions.

With spiced cakes, fruit drinks, much-loved Caymanian dishes such as stewed turtle, conch and fried fish, and a beautiful garden setting with crystal blue water as a backdrop, the annual New Year’s Day Garden Party was a cultural sweet treat for those attending.

The century-old tradition is regarded as a day of fun, fellowship, excellent local food and good company.

Hosted by the church congregation, the garden party revisits older days of fellowship get-togethers. Visitors listened to tales of farmers saving the best of their produce, craft or food for auction, and watched as people danced around the maypole.

Plenty of fun

“It was really a good day,” said Marsha Dixon, one of many church organizers of the event, which included face painting, a grab bag for children, maypole dancing, plant and fruit stalls, a jumble sale, and live music with Cardinal DaCosta and Lammie and company.

“The day was full of fun and excitement. The nice cool breeze and relaxing atmosphere was just delightful,” said Ms Dixon. “We had lots of people attending from all the districts, the young and old got together.”

Scenery

“I think the scenery has a lot to do with it. When we were hosting the garden party at the church hall, it was not the same. Since we took the event to the Church Manse and near the sea, the event just continues to grow bigger and better each year,” Ms Dixon added.

There was also some fancy footwork at Wednesday’s garden party. Energetic seniors Josie Solomon, Olivine Solomon and Violente Berry put everyone to shame when it came to dancing, showing many of the youngsters at the event, and even Bodden Town MLA and government minister Osbourne Bodden, how it was done.
