Little League stages final tryouts for upcoming season

Little League is nearly ready to launch its 25th season.

The Cayman Islands Little League Association is conducting its final player evaluations and registration for the 2014 campaign, which will mark Little League’s 25th season in existence. Catering to kids ages 5-16 at no charge, the Field of Dreams will host the last session on Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Play will be split up into various age groups. For example, the A division is for players ages 9-10, the AA group caters to boys age 11-12 and the AAA segment is designed for boys age 13-16. The 2014 season runs from January until early June.

Little League in Cayman started in 1989 and games were first played on the Field of Dreams facility in 1998. Since then, about 400 children and more than 500 adults play weekly at the Field of Dreams during a given season.

Observing this year’s performances will be the recently re-elected association board. Jeff Pouchie is league president and John Cridland is the vice president. The other board members are: Richard Finlay (secretary), Jason Bechard (treasurer), Tayna Dube (fundraising), Rob Harris (baseball commissioner), Sara Mackay (marketing and public relations), Andrew Holness (director at large) and Alan Markoff (adult coed program coordinator), with Jonathan Dacosta and Paul Reynolds also listed on the board.

In his president’s report last year, Pouchie said the main goals for Little League are keeping the program free for children, addressing the challenge of worn field surfaces, increasing the use of the clubhouse, enhancing the level of training for local coaches, and emphasizing travel teams.

Outside of the Little League season, the association has tentative plans for a kickball tournament fundraiser at Field of Dreams this month along with a “reunion play day” this year.
