NBC hooks us up

Local fishermen will be gaining more accolades in 2014.

Cayman Islands fishing takes center stage this month as the featured destination on NBC Sports’ “Extreme Fishing Adventures.”

The season premiere focuses on Capt. Jimmy Nelson’s experience when he participated in the Cayman First Insurance All Tackle fishing tournament.

Put on by the Cayman Islands Angling Club, the competition served as Cayman’s final fishing event for 2013 and offered more than US$12,000 in prizes.

Nelson teamed up with the Strikeforce crew to land a 51.9-pound yellowfin tuna.

Angling Club president Franklin Thompson said Nelson is airing multiple shows about Cayman’s fishing exploits.

“As you may know, the angling club has partnered with a number of fishing shows over the past years,” Thompson said. “In 2013, we were fortunate enough to have ‘Extreme Fishing Adventures’ film four fishing shows in the Cayman Islands.

“These will promote our island and tourism product to the world.”

Nelson is also a contributor for Gaff magazine and serves as host of Gaff Life TV. Cayman was featured last summer on both mediums, with Nelson being on these shores for the 2013 Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament.

Next up for local fishing is the angling club annual general meeting on Feb. 5, and the Barcadere Classic scheduled for March 1-2.
