Getting published

We want to clarify how members of the public can get information onto the pages of the Compass.

Generally this newspaper considers four different categories of material for publication:

News story: A reporter writes a story about an event or subject of an investigation.

News release: The Compass’s policy is not to print news releases verbatim. A newsroom editor will determine whether to rewrite the news release for publication, assign a reporter to follow up, or take no action.

Advertisement: Our sales department will advise clients on prices and terms. The client has control over the appearance and content of their paid advertisement, which will be clearly designated as such.

Letter to the editor: Letters to the editor appear in the Editorial/Opinion section of the newspaper, usually Page 4.

To be considered for publication, a letter to the editor must meet the following criteria (subject to the editorial board’s discretion):

  • Approximately 500 words or fewer.
  • An individual may have one letter published in a 30-day period.
  • Letters must be signed by an individual(s). An individual can sign a letter on behalf of a group or organization (i.e. David R. Legge on behalf of the Caymanian Compass).
  • Letters must be addressed to, obviously, the editor. No “open letters to the Queen.”
  • Letters must be exclusive to the Compass. We will not publish a letter that has already appeared in another media outlet. After we publish a letter, it may be shared freely with other outlets.
  • The Compass reserves the right to edit letters for space, style and acceptable taste.

  1. An individual may have one letter published in a 30-day period.

You forgot unless your name is George Will or Charles Krauthammer.

Letters must be exclusive to the Compass. We will not publish a letter that has already appeared in another media outlet

But you publish opinion pieces from the US that have already appeared in another media outlet on the page you have labeled Our Views.

Your policy displays an incredible lack of journalistic ethics.
