Bollywood comes alive at fundraiser for Crisis Centre

The Cayman Islands Crisis Centre next month hosts its first fundraising gala, “Bollywood Dreamz Gala – Let’s Balle Balle for a Cause.”

The event, organized by Rachna Buxani, founder of Cayman’s Bollywood Dance Blast, also aims to raise awareness about the center, which offers a safe haven for victims of domestic abuse.

The gala will be at the Marriott resort’s ballroom, March 15 from 7 p.m. The event includes a cocktail reception, authentic Indian delicacies, photo booth, Bollywood performances, a dhol drummer, henna tattoos and musical entertainment by DJ Pawan from Miami.

Commenting on the choice of theme for the gala dinner, Buxani said, “Since the inception of Bollywood Dance Blast, which offers dance classes on the island in support of the Crisis Centre, there has been an overwhelming response from people with regards to the dance and music. While there have been some events on island with an Indian flair, no one has ever showcased the true grandeur of Bollywood [the film industry of India]. This is our effort to give a true Bollywood style evening to all our guests.”

She added, “Domestic violence is not only an issue that affects women, it affects the whole community and that’s why the community involvement is extremely important for the CICC.”

She said that almost half of the center’s annual funding must be generated by grants, donations and fundraising initiatives.
