All Stars in contention for double

As local netball nears its playoffs, All Stars netball club remains in line to repeat as champions.

All Stars has two clubs in the 2013-2014 Appleby Netball League, put on by the Cayman Islands Netball Association. Both sides, which play at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts, are near the top of their respective standings.

The A team, sponsored by Conyers, is the reigning national champion and have started the league’s ‘second phase’ 2-0 in division one – called the Championship group – after victories of 52-20 over Flames Strikers and 44-34 over Rising Stars A. Talents such as Katherine Maw and Nicola Williams helped the squad to a winning record in the first stage of the season. The squad’s next contest is against fellow frontrunner, 2-0 Roma, on March 13.

The B team for All Stars, sponsored by Cayman National Bank, are also unbeaten in the B division – termed the Plate group. Last year’s Plate winners have had convincing victories in recent weeks over Unity (49-15) and Affinity Sapphires (26-14). Adena Miller and Brittany Mobley are among the top players that helped All Stars go through the season’s initial phase atop the rankings. The side’s next game is March 15 against Lights International. The next set of division matches is on March 8 as Lights take on Affinity at 8 p.m. and Unity challenge Rising Stars B.

Outside of the top two groupings, there is a division three in action. Those standings are also tight as Blue Diamonds, Ernst and Young Hot Shots and team University College of the Cayman islands all have victories. A double-header is planned for March 8 at 6:45 p.m. as Spirits face Hot Shots and UCCI battle Jacques Scott Social.
