Packers blank Titans in opener

Youth flag football saw its first official games this month.

The Security Centre Ltd. 2014 Youth Flag Football League recently completed week one at the Camana Bay Sports Field. The competition, in its sixth season, has 180 boys and girls playing across the three divisions: junior (ages 7-9), middle (10-13) and senior (14-17).

The game of the week in the senior ranks saw Security Centre Packers beat Al La Kebab Titans, 13-0. Aiden Clements led the winners with two touchdown passes and Roylin Nickolson had a touchdown catch and a huge fourth down reception to keep the game-ending drive alive. Karim Murray had the other TD catch, plus an extra point reception and an interception. Rashaun Wright had a great all-around game catching 4-5 passes and shutting down one of the Titans’ top threats, Josh Whittaker, on defense. The Titans’ main standout was Kalie Broderick, who made a number of excellent tackles on defense.

Popeyes Saints clipped the Dart Dolphins, 13-8, in the other division game.

In the middle division, the game of the week saw Walkers Wolverines outlast the UBS Eagles, 26-21. The shootout started with Walkers driving the ball down field to score after six plays. Newcomer UBS answered immediately with a long scoring drive of their own. The Wolverines could not sustain their next drive and the Eagles made them pay with another score to take a 14-7 lead. The Wolverines eventually responded but failed to get the extra point to make the score 14-13.

In the second half, it looked like the Eagles were going to score, however, Michael Gocul intercepted a pass and ran it back for a TD. The Wolverines converted on the extra point, making the score 20-14. The Eagles then ran a long drive, chewing up the clock and eventually scoring with 45 seconds remaining. They got the extra point making the score 21-20. In the dying seconds, Walkers clawed their way to midfield and on the game’s final play, with no time left, Gocul threw a bomb to Jabari Ebanks who made an outstanding, game-winning TD catch.

Conyers Colts beat SRS Steelers, 18-12, in another thriller. Conyers needed last minute heroics from Tommy Sperandeo, who threw the game-winning TD pass.

In the junior division, the game of the week saw the Fruta Kool Kidz defeat the Broadhurst Buccaneers, 7-6. It was a defensive battle throughout and special mention goes to 8-year-old Demae Lee and Anthony Chin, who made clutch tackles to keep their Buccaneers in the game. Lee ended up with a team-high three tackles.

Rounding out group play, Maples Raiders beat the Burger King Gators, 18-0.

The league started with two weeks of training in February before transitioning into preseason games. Matches are every Saturday, with week three slated for March 15.
