Health City still awaits first patient

Plans for Health City to welcome its first patients this week have been put back.

The hospital, which will specialize in heart and orthopedic surgeries, officially opened its doors on Feb. 25, with the first patients anticipated on March 10.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said they were “working through some last issues” which had led to a delay of around 10 days for the first surgery.

Dr. Devi Shetty, the Indian cardiologist behind the new 140-bed hospital in High Rock in East End, has said he envisioned making Cayman a pioneer of a new type of healthcare delivery, that will make the facility the best in the world.

The first patients at the hospital are expected to most likely be charitable cases, though directors hope that a steady flow of paying patients will soon follow, initially from the Caribbean area.

Work is expected to begin later this year on a hotel and residences. A second phase, involving a 300-bed unit, is scheduled to begin in late 2015. Ultimately, the plan is for the site to encompass a 2,000-bed hospital.
