KYSTAR preps for Invitational

Local track and field is bracing for another spectacle as KYSTAR Athletics stages their third annual Cayman Invitational track meet.

The event will take place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on May 7. It follows on the heels of two previous star-studded spectacles that have attracted some of the world’s fastest runners such as Jamaican sprinters Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt and American runner Carmelita Jeter.

Bolt, the world’s fastest man, opened his 100 meter season here in 2013 and beat training partner Kemar Bailey-Coe in a photo finish as both had identical times of 10.09 seconds.

An evaluation by All-Athletics.com of 650 one-day invitational track meets for 2013 placed the Cayman Invitational at No. 45. The only Caribbean meets above Cayman were the longer established Jamaica Invitational (No. 23) and Puerto Rico’s Ponce Grand Prix (No. 36). Top of the standings was American meet the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

The Water Authority Board is donating $4,500 to assist the meet. Water Authority Director Dr. Gelia Frederick-van Genderen said, “The Water Authority is pleased to support the upcoming Cayman Invitational track meet. Promoting youth and sports in the Cayman Islands and internationally is very important and beneficial to everyone in the community.”

With last year’s race being such a success, the promoters are positive that the 2014 Cayman Invitational will have an even greater turnout. The race is supported by the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association, the Cayman Islands Government, the Cayman Islands Athletic Association and many generous sponsors.

Cydonie Mothersill, owner of KYSTAR Athletics, said, “It is with sincere gratitude that we extend our deepest thanks to the Water Authority for once again coming onboard. Their continued support is appreciated as it is true testament to the event and to sports within the islands.”
