Woman charged with Security Centre theft

Charge involves theft of $936,048

A woman charged with stealing $936,048.90 from the Security Centre appeared in court Tuesday.

Patti Jane Ebanks, 48, is charged with the theft from the security company in Huldah Avenue in George Town.

Details of the charge are that it was stolen between April 1, 2010, and June 1, 2013. The defendant, who was an employee at the time of the alleged offense, also faces one charge of money laundering, two charges of forgery and 35 charges of making documents without authority.

The documents are checks allegedly made and signed by Ebanks without lawful authority or excuse, and with intent to defraud or deceive. Most of the 35 charges refer to a specific calendar month, during which a number of checks were made.

Defense attorney Ben Tonner pointed out that the charges are “Category B,” meaning that they can be tried in either Summary Court or Grand Court.

He advised Magistrate Valdis Foldats that he had received no papers yet from the crown about the matter.

The magistrate set April 8, as the date for Ebanks to return to court, and he continued her bail until then.
