Rugby in the Cayman Islands launched a new initiative to showcase its local ties.
The Cayman Rugby Football Union named 11 spokespersons to handle the sport’s various facets last week. They are: Dane Campbell – Under-19; Stephen Chin – Schools; Robbie Cribb Jr. – Men’s Elite Sevens; Peter DeVere – Governance; James Geary – Men’s Domestic; Chris Jackson – History; Jodie McTaggart – Women; Cueme Parker – Youth; Alex Pineau – Men’s Elite 15s; Jenna Richards – Women; and David Robinson – Referees.
Director of Rugby Richard ‘Grizz’ Adams said they serve as ambassadors for the game.
“Our mission is to introduce and build local Caymanian rugby personalities to the people of the Cayman Islands,” Adams said. “We at the union have selected a number of individuals who are Caymanian, have been involved in rugby for a few seasons, have experienced one or more of our programs, played or were introduced to the game either in school or through community rugby programs, who have through study either completed university degree programs or found solid employment or both. These young individuals have a message and we would like to get this message out to the rest of the Cayman Islands.”
The spokespersons have varied goals for their segments. For example, Campbell wants to bring awareness to junior players, Cribb Jr. is focused on a November tournament in Mexico, Pineau is targeting a competition in Freeport, Bahamas, in May with a match against an American select side in June, and McTaggart is helping the ladies sevens gear up for matches in April and the summer.
Parker said his mission is to build better overall people.
“I’m dealing with the youth academy program, kids who are already involved in the sport and in high school, ages 13-16,” Parker said. “I’m looking to mentor them and refine their skills while helping them grow as people and get better in every way.”
