Burger Shack deep fry Wok-N-Roll

Burger Shack continued their winning ways after quieting the chatty Wok-N-Roll, 19-6, in the Burger King Coed Flag Football League.

This game had a lot of playful pregame trash-talking since both teams are well acquainted and boast championship accolades. It managed to live up to its competitive billing in the first half with a 6-6 score, but the gourmet burger experts eventually separated themselves in the second half.

Barrett Edri filled in admirably for starting quarterback Kevin Solomon by coordinating three scoring drives. Perry Levy was his favorite target throughout and caught the key tie-breaking touchdown in the second half.

Terry Ballard had a career day with a touchdown reception, sack and interception. Cassandra Bodden kept the chains moving on the ground and Ida Sey made a cameo appearance and played great defense. For Wok-N-Roll, they had a couple opportunities to make a game of it as their defense led by Phil Brown managed to get a few stops.

Unfortunately, quarterback Adrean Russell and his offense had a rough night, particularly with turnovers. He floated a couple passes down the middle in heavy traffic that were intercepted, wiping out potential scoring drives. Carrie Carter (nee Barnett) was their lone bright spot with a number of catches and their only touchdown received from the surprising arm of Tito Solomon. Solomon also had a nice interception on defense.

In the appetizer round, Andro Elevator sent shockwaves through the league when they embarrassed the undermanned Cronies team, 32-0. Brendon and Lisa Malice once again propelled the elevator professionals with their patented ground-heavy misdirection sets. They did a great job of playing at the pace they wanted, sustaining drives to control the clock and minimise the Cronies possessions. Statistically, the Malices threw for an impressive five touchdowns combined to the likes of Nicholas Roberts and Jamuel Dell.

For the Cronies, this was a somewhat worrying outcome for a team who many believe have title aspirations. The absence of their two best playmakers, Cueme Parker and Glenn Duran Jr., was noticeable but it’s fair to assume they expected to perform better. They lacked a sense of resolve and seemed to give up early in the game.

According to team captain Oliver Parker, “Collectively, we had a bad day at the office as offensively we were deficient and defensively we were undisciplined.” Fortunately, they have a bye this week and can use the extra time to revisit their approach and mind set.

The second round of games saw Duke’s capture their first win of the season when they knocked off Go Flag Yourself, 28-24, behind a breakout performance by Richard Campbell. Campbell repeatedly showed off his strong arm, pushing the ball downfield for multiple touchdowns. Matthew Bone and Andrew Frederick were his favorite targets, who consistently got behind Go Flag Yourself’s shaky defensive back end.

For Go Flag Yourself, Michael Carey took the snaps and had a controlled and judicious showing. He took care of the football and put together multiple scoring drives that on most nights would have secured a victory. Unfortunately, the lack of support from his defensive unit was simply too much to overcome. Scimone Campbell also had a notable outing for Go Flag Yourself with multiple touchdowns.

In the B division, Cayman Auto Diagnostics cruised by Walkers, 14-0. For a team that has quietly dismantled every foe they’ve faced this season, they seem to be playing with a chip on their shoulder. Spearheaded by the savvy and resourceful Robbie Cribb, the auto specialists are currently on path to clash with frontrunners Higgs and Johnson for division supremacy. Quality playmakers like Simon Rivers and Jessica Pawlik were in action for Cayman Auto and scored during the game.

For Walkers, it was unfortunately the same old story for the squad trying to find themselves. They again were unable to put together a drive that resulted in points. Horace Walters made the only recorded play of the night when he snatched an interception.

In the night capper, the Ospreys turned a few heads after eking out a hard-fought win against WestStar, 26-20. Both teams were extremely focused and schematically sound, which resulted in the game having five lead changes. The multitalented Dionne Whittaker was the difference maker for the Ospreys, throwing and receiving a couple of touchdowns. She also played great fundamental defense as instructed by her coach and hubby Rex Whittaker. Her son, Jon Whittaker, and team captain Ernesto Ebanks were the premier benefactors of her play.

For WestStar, it was another encouraging performance by a growing team who put themselves in position to win at the end. Unfortunately, any chance of a thrilling comeback in consecutive weeks was killed quickly as the dialled-in Ospreys defense shut down their final drive. The three amigos – Kevin Morales, Jessica Ebanks and Timothy Coulson – again had prominent outings for WestStar.

To round up last week’s action, Maggie Ebanks and Impressions Beauty Salon remained undefeated when they overwhelmed Shakira Davis and Los Terroristas, 30-14. Chris Lucas threw four touchdown passes for Impressions, split between recipients Paul Chin and Jon Carter. Terroristas remain on the hunt for a win behind quarterback Jordan Stubblefield, deep threat Theo Edman and the versatile Matthew Yates, who had a tackle and broke up a few passing plays on defense after making an impressive extra-point reception on offense.

Higgs and Johnson remained unblemished after beating Chris Lebeau’s Wakeboard Cayman, 32-12. Brad Conolly threw two touchdowns to RaShawn Wright and Jeff Wight and ran in another score.

Lastly, Burger King got off the snide by knocking off Kamala Murugesu and Maples, 21-6, behind the defensive prowess of Justin Miles and Mitchie Williams. Garry Rutty led their offensive attack, throwing three touchdowns to Dillion Claassens and Ryan and Betsy Smith.

League action resumes on March 21 at the Ed Bush stadium in West Bay where a number of attractive matchups are on schedule, such as KPMG versus Maples, Kirk Freeport versus Cayman Auto Diagnostics, Pizza Hut challenging Andro Elevator, and CrossFit7Mile battling Burger Shack.

Richard Campbell of Duke’s and Dionne Whittaker of the Ospreys were recognized as the Men’s and Women’s players of the week.
