The Dominos Warriors have top billing in local basketball.
Dominos, 5-1, now sit first place in division one of the Digicel National Men’s League, put on by the Cayman Islands Basketball Association. The Warriors are coming off a 94-45 thrashing of the 1-5 Wendy’s Tarheels last Sunday at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Center.
Collin Anglin continues to find his groove for Dominos as his 29 points led the way. Chris Lucas added 25 points and eight rebounds, Christian Ferrer notched 16 points with three 3-pointers and Kenval Bryan posted 13 points and eight rebounds. Andres Kirchman had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Wendy’s and Clay Coleman added nine points.
The Warriors now have a showdown with the 4-2 Caledonian Lions on March 30 at 7 p.m. Caledonian are coming off a shocking 73-57 defeat at the hands of the 4-2 Silver Bullets. Curtis Wilson led the winners with 17 points and 15 rebounds, Denton Cole posted 14 points and Jake Whittaker netted 12 points. Borislav ‘Boka’ Djordjic scored 23 points for the Lions and John White contributed 11 points.
The form of those teams is encouraging to many onlookers, like technical director for Cayman basketball Victor ‘Voot’ O’Garro.
“In division one there is a shocker taking place as no one saw Caledonian coming,” O’Garro said. “They are the new team on the block, led by Boka, who have already beaten last year’s finalists Dominos and the Sol Blazers. Boka, White and Vanrick Felix – a former Wolves player – are all playing well. Collin is showing the brilliance of his old self for Dominos. Every team has star players. George Town Sports Club has a new look team, with Eckerd McField the driving force behind it, and their center Kristopher Brand is expected to perform well.”
The current standings show Warriors ahead of Caledonian, Bullets and 4-2 Sol Blazers, the defending national champions. Tarheels and 0-6 George Town are at the bottom of the league.
Blazers are coming off a 74-62 win over George Town as Deandre Simpson soared for 22 points and 16 rebounds while Kevin Maxwell scored 22 points and 14 rebounds. Brand had another stellar outing for the losing side with 21 points and 16 rebounds and Andre Tyndall chipped in 18 points.
Aside from the Dominos-Caledonian showdown on March 30, Bullets face Blazers at 4 p.m. before George Town battle Tarheels at 5:30 p.m.
