Car fire sparks false alarm at dump

Firefighters were called to reports of another dump fire on Wednesday, but this time it was a false alarm.

A scrap car was on fire near the Ready Mix Concrete Plant, close to the landfill site, Tina Choy, of the Cayman Islands Fire Service, said a member of the public had reported that the “dump was on fire,” just after midday on Wednesday.

Fire crews responded immediately and discovered the source of the blaze was actually a car that was being scrapped for parts on a site close to the dump.

“Some fuel had leaked out from the gas tank on the frame of the car and due to the individuals using a welding torch to cut the axel from the car the sparks ignited the gas causing the vehicle to busts into flames. The individuals on scene extinguished the vehicle and when fire service arrived they wet the vehicle for further cooling,” said Ms. Choy.
