A new volleyball competition had an interesting start.
The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation launched its inaugural coed four-a-side competition over the weekend at Public Beach. The Digicel Beach Volleyball League hosted week one matches catering to varying levels of ability with each registered player taking home a goody bag from Digicel and drinks sponsors Powerade providing refreshments for every match.
In the AA division, Sonova Beach beat out five other squads: Hot Chocolate, Funky Monkey and Sand Monsters (tied for third), Aged To Perfection and Who Throws a Shoe. The A division featured Side Out besting six teams: Shoe Throws a Who, Will Work for Sets and Screaming Pelicans (tied for third), Sandy Regina’s, Team Car Ramrod and Coors Light.
Most of the competition was centered in the final two groups, which produced 24 squads. Nice Tips won the B division ahead of Four Stars, Sloppy Sets and Wakeboard Cayman (tied for third), Cummy Bears, Silver Bullets, Down On Your Knees, Serving Under The Influence, Bumpin Uglies, My Corona Lights, Riptide and I’d Hit That. Wade’s World topped the C division ahead of Blood and Sand, Planet Volleywood and Volley Rogers (tied for third), Friends of Wilson, PwC, Sets On The Beach, Notorious DIG, Kiss My Ace, Lucky Spike, BDO and Who Spiked That.
At this stage, the league is a mix of newcomers and familiar names within the sport of volleyball. Among those involved are national women’s team member Cristin Alexander, Javid Ali, Ryan Mushin, Daniel Pattico, Meagan Tanner and 17-year-old prodigy Blakely Maynard.
League matches take place on Sunday mornings from 11 a.m. with week two happening on June 1.
