Cayman reggae artist snags major gig

Cayman’s own Stuart Wilson is set to play at the largest reggae festival in Jamaica – Reggae Sumfest

The musician tells Weekender that the festival began back in 1993 and headliners include Wiz Khalifa, Jah Cure, Chronixx, Jason Derulo plus Sean Paul and Tessanne Chin.

Stuart is scheduled to play on July 18, which is “International Night” of the weeklong festival.

“International Night is where top artists from around the world join Jamaican acts in the lineup,” Wilson says. “Over the years, appearances have included some of the biggest and brightest names in music,” he says.

“For me, this show will mean that I will be continuing to take my music to a larger audience and share the stage with some of the most current and relevant musical talent from Jamaica and around the world. It is a great opportunity and one I an honored be a part of. It will also mean that I will be playing live for industry giants at one of the greatest Reggae festivals on earth, a true blessing indeed and a great addition to anyone’s musical resume,” Wilson said.

The gig has come about in part due to the heavy play on Jamaican radio for Stuart’s track, “Real Come Back Story,” plus great video rotation on CVM and Hype TV for the song “So In Love With You.” With a new management team in tow, things are looking up for the songwriter and performer.

“I would say it is a testament to the work that I put in last year and earlier this year during Reggae month in February. I also cannot be ungrateful to the almighty, who is the great strategist,” Stuart says.

He adds that he is looking forward to meeting everyone and enjoying the experience at Sumfest.

“[This means] being among other artists and creators and of course playing for people from all walks of life. I hope the opportunity leads to more of the same.”

It’s the continuation of a very good year so far for the reggae fanatic, who of course already has the next few months planned out.

“I have a new single to release in the next few weeks, which I am really excited about, called ‘Leroy,’ and I have completed a video for ‘Real Come Back Story,’ which I hope to release soon,” he said. “Ideally, I would like to release that video in the run-up to the festival, but we shall see.”

Reggae Sumfest 2014 takes place at Montego Bay, Jamaica, from July 13-19.
