Sisters pack their bags for camp

Three-year-old Kylah Scott sleeps wearing her pink backpack.

The tot from Rock Hole in George Town is so excited to return to summer camp each morning, she does not want to take it off.

It’s a rare opportunity for Kylah, who is now able to attend the summer camp at Casa Montessori with her sister Kiara, 2, after a sponsorship program organized by Natalie Mallinson from Cayman charity Acts of Random Kindness.

Ms. Mallinson met the family, which also includes siblings Keeshano, 4, and Kessa, 11 months, when delivering food vouchers to their community from money raised from a sand castle competition in June. She said she recognized a need for something more in the community and came up with the idea of sponsorships that would allow children from less fortunate families to attend summer camps.

Without the camps, the children are not involved in educational and interactive activities such as arts and crafts, she said.

The Scott family is the first to benefit from the initiative, with the girls attending camp throughout the month. Ms. Mallinson hopes to have opportunities for more families for next summer’s camps.

“Those who could never afford a summer camp will actually have the opportunity to do it,” Ms. Mallinson said. “It’s also getting them ready for school; it’s something they have never experienced before.

“There’s about 20 amazing summer camps [in Grand Cayman] and if they all gave one spot to sponsor a child, we could give them a chance.”

Casa Montessori owner Sarah Parchment said the sponsorship exposes the children to things that they would otherwise not be able to experience. “It’s nice to give back to the community and actually give these children a chance to be in a school,” Ms. Parchment said.

“It will just open their eyes and they’ll see there is a place to have fun, to be creative and to be around people that care about them.”

She said the school would offer the sponsorship to one family each summer.
