Jamaicans celebrate independence in Cayman

Jamaicans living in Cayman celebrated their nation’s 52 years of independence with lots of food, cultural dances, costumes and music in George Town on Friday. 

Although the anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence Day is officially on Aug. 6, Jamaicans, Caymanians and expats celebrated the day on Friday with a street carnival on Cardinall Avenue. 

Minister for Culture Osbourne Bodden, who attended the event that lasted from morning until mid-afternoon, said it was a joy to be celebrating with Jamaica, adding that Jamaicans continue to commemmorate their independence day not just in Cayman and Jamaica but around the world.  

Amid the festivities, Mr. Bodden reminded Jamaicans as they celebrated to remember the battles and sacrifices their ancestors had made along the way. 

Elaine Harris, assistant honorary consulate read the Governor General’s Emancipation Day Message, in which Sir Patrick Allen thanked those from all walks of life who were committed to working to achieve Jamaica’s vision.

“Let us now move with haste to engrave a new profile on the local and international image of Jamaica. We must believe in ourselves and in our potential to be a truly great nation,” he said in his message. 

He said it was time to stand together and combine all efforts to free the country from every form of barrier, tribalism and hindrance.
