Get Active program wraps up

A group of Cayman’s teens lost a total of 65 pounds after completing a 12-week fitness program this month.

The Get Active Challenge is a initiative designed to promote healthy living for teens. Participants in the challenge, along with their parents, guardians, siblings and friends as well as the event sponsors and the trainers, joined together to celebrate their achievements at Ortanique restaurant in Camana Bay on Aug. 2.

“The Children’s Health Task Force was started by the [Cayman Heart Fund] in recognition of the fact that healthy habits learned early, have a lasting impact through one’s life,” said David Dinner, chairman of the Cayman Heart Fund.

In her main address, Get Active Initiative co-founder Dr. Christine Chen thanked the sponsors of the challenge.

“Thanks to screening, we have been able to identify a few at-risk participants who have elevated cholesterol and who are already at risk of developing diabetes, thus helping them and their families to realize just how important this lifestyle change is,” said Dr. Chen.

Dr. Chen also thanked trainers Ernest Ebanks and Andre Morgan of Body Sculptor Fitness “for training our participants, pushing them to their limits, and helping them to realize that, yes, they can do it.”

During the fitness program teens did workout training twice a week at Body Sculptor Fitness. Teens also received nutritional counseling from experts on Saturdays, and were shown what food items were healthy choices at local supermarkets. They also took part in outdoor activities such as paddleboarding and Beach boot camp with Red Sail Sports.

Dietician Kristen Lomas from 7 Mile Medical Clinic also played a part, Dr. Chen said, in helping to “educate our participants and their families … about making more nutritious choices at home and away from home.”

In introducing the “End of Challenge” video, Michael Muirhead, co-founder of the Get Active Challenge, described it as “testament to all the work that had been done over the last 12 weeks and to the sponsors who have provided us with a lot of fun activities and things to do.” The finale of the event was an announcement of the various awards and prizes for the participants.
