A fork of lightning pierces the sky over Snug Harbor as thunderstorms battered Grand Cayman this week, while a waterspout was clearly visible to visitors at the Holiday Inn later in the week.
Photographer Bob Cameron used a long exposure to capture the precise moment lightning struck near the Britannia Villas on Sunday. Bill Vogrin, visiting from Colorado, captured the image of the waterspout from the balcony of the Holiday Inn hotel. The spectacular weather, which provides the backdrop to rainy season in Cayman, is expected to continue through the weekend.
Meteorologist Kerry Powery of the Cayman Islands Weather Service said such storms are a feature of summer in the tropics. He said there is no “organized weather system” on the radar, but passing tropical waves are expected to bring heavy rain, thunder and lightning over the next three or four days.
