Academy girls tryouts

Girls between the ages of 12 and 14 will have their chance this coming football season to enjoy the game with one of Cayman’s leading youth programs.

Academy Sports Club is launching its first Under-15 girls team in this year’s Cayman Islands Football Association league.

“We are having tryouts this Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Academy field on Outpost Road and hope to see a lot of young female footballers there,” said Coach Virgil Seymour of Academy.

Seymour said the club had discussed introducing a girls team for a while and thought this season was the right year to do it.

“Since we have announced that we will be having tryouts there has a been a great response, so we are really looking forward to achieving similar success with the girls team as we have demonstrated with our bouts teams over the years.”

Seymour added that following the U-15 Girls CONCACAF tournament here last month, Jeffrey Webb, the CONCACAF president, said there was not enough interest and participation in Cayman by this age group.

Seymour responded by introducing his own team to add to the four that already exist: Sunset, Future, Scholars International and Elite. He also believes this is a good age for girls to start team football because they are old enough to be independent from parents and guardians and young enough to excel quickly and possibly make careers in the game or get scholarships. The Academy U-15 girls team tryouts are from 9 a.m. to noon. Girls must be born in the years 2000, 2001 or 2002.
