Humane Society road show seeks homes for shelter pets

About 18 dogs wearing orange and yellow colored “Adopt Me” covers were taken to the Dart Park on South Church Street Saturday for a Humane Society road show that was part fundraiser, part adoption effort.

The charitable organization has hosted similar efforts at Camana Bay for dogs and cats, but board member Leslie Walker said the Dart Park allowed for a much larger adoption effort. The Dart Park location also allowed for local dog trainer Heidi Suarez to perform some tricks with her border collies Hendrix, Sadie and Ginseng.

“We just wanted to show people what well-trained dogs can do,” Ms. Suarez said. Mrs. Walker said the situation with overcrowding at the Humane Society shelter in George Town had not improved, even though a steady stream of residents are coming in to seek adoptions.

“We’re getting some adoptions, the problem is as soon as we get a few dogs out the door a few more appear at the door,” she said.

The shelter has more than 70 dogs and around 50 to 60 cats at present.

“We desperately need a new shelter, but the first step is to find a piece of land,” Mrs. Walker said.
